Bridegroom: Mosheh bar Ya'akov.
Bride: Karolin bat Avraham.
Witnesses: Isaac [B...?], A. Myers.
Rabbi: Gershon bar Mosheh Simhah.
Marriage contract, manuscript, ink on paper, dated 22 of Elul 5642 at Filadelfiya (1882). The signatures of the goom and the witnesses appear in English at the bottom of the text. ""Moses H. Stern & Carrie Kaufman September 6th, 1882"" is written in English on the top left corner of the ketubah text. The traditional text is framed by an illuminated mat, which was added later. Its art and style appear to follow forms of American folk-art with designs reminiscent of the patterns on cross-stitch samplers. Philadelphia is written at the top of the mat underneath an image of the bride and groom under a wedding canopy, with the Hebrew and Gregorian years of the marriage written on either side. The names of the bride and groom are written at the bottom of the mat. A floral vine motif completes the rest of the frame.
60 x 46 cm.
