3. This represents what came near to being a battle. The Army wagons were corralled in a circle with horses and mules inside and the Cavalry dismounted in companies outside ready for fighting when an Indian came forward with a flag of truce. Captain Pratt, Adjutant of the Command, was sent forward to see what was wanted. After some parleying the professions of friendship the Indian offered were accepted. It was then found the Indian demonstration had been made to hold our command back while the women moved their camp across a stream (the Sweet Water) and onto their reservation where we dare not attack them. It was our duty to attack and destroy them off their reservations, which we would have done but for the moving of their camp.
