Abstract:
The diagram indicates that a new vault either had been or was to be added to the 'catacombs' for Sir Alexander, his wife (d. 15 Oct. 1864), and their daughter Grace Jane (died in infancy, 1817). Measurements for some of the constructions are given. The burials in the old catacombs under the church are designated by initials, with some dates and notes; it is here that JB, Margaret Montgomerie, and their daughter Veronica are buried. The drawing also shows two 'upper apartments' (forming what was later called the 'Mausoleum'); the one on the right with two coffins, on large and one small. In 1935 the coffins of Sir James (died 1857) and a daughter, Theresa Louisa, who died in infancy, were seen in this location. A. B. Gibb, who make the sketch, is probably Alexander Boswell Gibb, son of Andrew, long the factor at Auchinleck.
