Description:
Henry Eld (1814-1850), born in New Haven, became a midshipman in the United States Navy and joined the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. He served on the ship Peacock, on the ship Vincennes at Fiji, and joined Lt. George Emmons's overland journey through Oregon and California.
Abstract:
Two journals (bound in one volume) dating from Henry Eld's service in the Wilkes Expedition which record his survey of Grays Harbor and overland journey through the Pacific Northwest. There are also three sketchbooks from the expedition.
