Abstract:
In May 1750, Edwards asked five persons--Joseph Bellamy, James Pierpont, Noah Parsons, John Searle, and Sarah Pierpont Edwards-for depositions to be presented to the final council of June 22, 1750, to show that his change of opinion on the qualifications for church membership was not something new. These witnesses affirmed that he had discussed his new view as early as September 1746, at the ordination of Samuel Buel in East Hampton, Long Island, had published it in Religious Affections, and had discussed it openly with people at Northampton.
