Manuscript on paper of Agostino Cesareo (Rome, 16th century), L'arte del navigare. The work is divided into three parts: Part I deals with cosmography and navigation in general and is illustrated; Part II contains a discussion of the height of the sun and of the Polar Star and tables of the declination of the sun; Part III studies the tides and has a couple of illustrations. Written by one scribe in careful Humanistica Cursiae. Many pages are spoiled by the acidity of the ink.
Coloured and uncoloured diagrams on ff. 5r: map of the earth in the centre of the circles of the elements, the planets and the heavens; 6r: volvelle with map of the earth and horizon which can be turned over a circle with the poles and the equinoctial; the index of the moving part is a picture of a medieval one-masted ship; 10v: diagram called Balestrino; 14r: volvelle showing the Lesser Bear and the Polar Star which can be turned over a circle with the eight directions of the winds; f. 16r: a similar volvelle (la figura dell' Orsa minore per conoscere le hore della notte); 20r: compass-card (ragione della navigatione per li venti obliqui); 20v: diagram (obliquita de' venti per navigare); 22v: diagram (il crucero overo la croce imagine); 46r: the Moon; 58r: volvelle (figura mobile per sapere e conoscere le maree secondo la regola generale).
Binding: Original limp vellum. On the front cover the inscription L'arte de ***; on the rear cover contemporary calculations.
