- As described in an accompanying note by Zora Neale Hurston, the photograph was taken in Hinds County, Tougaloo, Mississippi, by a teacher at Tougaloo University: “Aunt Daphne (left) and Aunt Rachel, were born and raised on the plantation and were believed to have been nearly 100 years old when the picture was made. This cabin in which they lived was the last of the original slave cabins on the place.”
